Option 1 – Additional Core Units
All Trainers and Assessors that hold the TAE40110 are –required to have the two new core units of the TAE40116 by April 2019. The units are:
- TAELLN411 Address Adult Language Literacy and Numeracy Skills
- TAEASS502 Design and Develop Assessment Tools
The inclusion of the LLN unit ensures that VET practitioners have a greater understanding of the foundation skills required in their industry sectors for both training and assessment and be better equipped to support their learners. TAEASS502 guides the design and develop assessment tools and the collection of quality evidence, including their application in formative, summative and recognition of prior learning (RPL) assessment.
The relevant pathways to complete these units are a Learning and Assessment Pathway or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). The Learning and Assessment pathway requires you to attend our interactive workshops and complete the relevant task assignments. Alternatively Recognition of Prior Learning is suitable for those who are working in the industry and have sufficient evidence to support their current competencies.

Option 2 – Upgrade to the TAE40116
Upgrade from the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (for participants who do not hold the new core units of TAELLN411 or TAEASS502) to the TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
Four units of competency are required. These are :
- TAEASS401 Plan assessment activities and processes
- TAEASS403 Participate in assessment validation
- TAEASS502 Design and develop assessment tools
- TAELLN411 Address adult language, literacy and numeracy skills.

|The TAE40110 to TAE40116 Upgrade focuses on developing assessment plans, organising the assessment process, developing assessment instruments and conducting a validation.|
This upgrade includes the skills and knowledge required to design and to develop assessment tools used to guide the collection of quality evidence, including their application in formative, summative and recognition of prior learning (RPL) assessment.
The LLN unit ensures that VET practitioners have a greater understanding of the foundation skills required in their industry sectors for both training and assessment and be better equipped to support their learners.
Modes of Delivery
Modes of delivery for your upgrade
Face-to-face – you will be required to attend one week of training for each cluster (three weeks in total). You will complete the task assignments with support from your trainers and workplace. The Pivot Institute offers regular in-house student support days to assist in the completion of your assignments if required.
Supported Distance Learning – you will be provided with a hard copy pack including your learners guide, assessment materials and all relevant supporting material. You will also be provided with an log in access to the Pivot Online Learning System (POLS). This platform holds all the learning material, assessment requirements, resources, needed to complete the qualification. Additionally, this is where you can attend our Virtual Classroom sessions and speak to your colleagues in the Participant Forum.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) – if you are currently in training and assessing and already hold the underpinning knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competency, then RPL may be an option. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that assesses your non-formal and formal learning to determine how your current skills and knowledge match the competency outcomes for partial or full completion of a Qualification. RPL must be based on evidence which can be matched against relevant units. This evidence will depend upon the unit and some evidence will go across a number of units. Your Assessor must be satisfied that you have addressed all the requirements of the relevant unit before they can mark you as competent in that unit.

I currently hold a higher-level qualification in adult education. What do I need to do to meet the new requirements?
The changes to the qualifications only apply to trainers and assessors who need the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and/or the Assessor Course to deliver and/or assess nationally recognised training.
RTOs (Registered Training Organisations) will continue to allow trainers and assessors who hold Diploma qualifications from the TAE10 or TAE Training and Education Training Package to deliver and/or assess nationally recognised training.
Is it compulsory to update to the TAE40116?
No, it is not compulsory to update to the TAE40116. The TAE40110 by itself is still a valid qualification to work as a trainer and assessor until 2019. However, by updating to the latest qualification you will be setting yourself apart from your peers, and show a commitment to continual professional development that is valued so highly in training and assessment roles. Also, you may recall when the TAA40104 was replaced by the TAE40110 back in 2010. It wasn’t long before employers became reluctant to accept trainers with the superseded qualification. Be prepared for the inevitable!
